As part of its commitment to environmental resilience and climate change adaptation, TECO is spearheading a week-long tree planting campaign across Tanzania’s coastal regions. This initiative coincides with the national celebration of World Environment Day (June 5) and focuses on restoring mangrove forests and riverine ecosystems in Bagamoyo, Rufiji, and Kilwa.
“Our coastal ecosystems are Tanzania’s natural shield against climate extremes. They support marine biodiversity, prevent erosion, and protect livelihoods. We must restore them urgently and together,” said Dr. Deo Mmanda, Executive Director of TECO.
The campaign named "Roots for Resilience" will engage:
• Over 2,000 volunteers, including schoolchildren, women’s groups, fisherfolk associations, and district authorities.
• Local ecopreneurs and youth innovators who have developed low-cost, eco-friendly planting tools.
• TECO’s trained facilitators conducting on-site training on mangrove planting techniques, biodiversity importance, and ecosystem care.
Each planting site is tailored to its local environmental need in Rufiji focuses on riverbank stabilization, Bagamoyo on seashore mangrove restoration, and Kilwa on degraded estuarine forest zones.
Participants will receive:
• A planting toolkit and TECO volunteer badge
• A certificate of participation
• Access to a mobile app for long-term monitoring and updates
“This is more than an event—it’s a movement to root climate hope in action,” said TECO Campaign Lead, Flumance Lyakurwa.
